We live and work on the unceded territory of the Sylix People of the Okanagan Nation and the Secwepemcúl’ecw People.

Although the TRC’s Calls to Action don’t specifically address veterinarians, we believe that our profession has an important role to play in reconciliation through our interactions with animal owners and as members of our community.

Sustainability

Sustainability is important to us and is something that is evolving with our business. Practicing medicine unavoidably produces waste but there are still things we can do to have a positive impact on the environment’s health. As our business grows, we hope to expand on this list.

What are we doing to be more sustainable?

  • Responsible paper use: We’re reducing our paper trail by using online software and communicating through text and email. When paper must be used, we’ll ensure it’s properly recycled.
  • Disposable products: Instead of ordering one time use products we’ve invested in reusable and washable products like cloth surgery greens and hand towels.
  • Laundry: Liquid detergent most often comes in large, hard to recycle plastic containers. The use of laundry strips or powder is better for the environment. Dryer sheets are replaced with wool drier balls.
  • Recycling: We always recycle when possible. While the recycling system is not perfect, we still believe it’s important to properly sort our waste.
  • Disposal: Drugs, sharps, and other hazardous material is properly disposed of to prevent ecotoxicity.
  • Stewardship: As veterinarians we have an important role to play in responsible antibiotic and parasiticide use. These drugs should only be prescribed when necessary and at the appropriate dosages. Drug resistance affects animals and people.
  • Carbon emissions: A mobile veterinary practice inevitably involves a lot of driving. We’re booking appointments in the most efficient way possible to decrease driving time.
  • Equipment: Regular and scheduled maintenance is important to protect the longevity of the equipment we own. When purchases must be made, we’ll look for quality used options first.
  • Reconciliation: Actively working towards reconciliation is a very important part of sustainability. Indigenous Peoples are the original stewards of the land, and their expertise is invaluable in working towards a greener future.
